Ranking every film in The Conjuring Universe (minus The Nun)

Recently, The Nun hit the cinemas. In celebration of apparently the weakest film in The Conjuring Universe (I haven’t seen it), I am ranking every film – minus The Nun.

4. Annabelle
On it’s own, Annabelle is mediocre. In comparison to other Conjuring films, it’s the worst. Other than the few jolts, Annabelle isn’t scary. And while the jolts are effective, they are very cheap and mundane compared to the immensely scary films of the franchise. The film’s main villain – a doll. The Conjuring used the haunted doll gimmick for the opening scene – which was fine. It was short, effective and scary. However, Annabelle attempts to stretch out a gimmick into a feature-length film. The pacing is all over the place a possessed doll causing lights to flicker, doors to slam, make explosions and move around by itself doesn’t work to make an engaging film.

3. Annabelle: Creation
While Annabelle’s prequel (a prequel to a prequel) suffers from some similar flaws the original did, Creation has much better pacing and tone. This time, the doll’s only really here to carry the evil, and we get much more Conjuring-esque scares. This film is much, much scarier with much better acting. Plus, a small cameo from Valak, in a picture behind one of the film’s main characters – a great tease for The Nun. Creation feels much more like a Conjuring film – sophisticated, scary, tense and has great characters.

2. The Conjuring 2: Enfield Poltergeist
Move over Rhode Island, hello London. The Conjuring 2 continues the adventures of Ed and Lorraine Warren as well as bringing new sources of terror to the table – Bill, Valak and The Crooked Man. Wan still orchestrates pulse-pounding scares but loses his touch slightly in terms of sophistication and originality. The Conjuring is superior, but The Conjuring 2 is an excellent effort and outcome from everyone involved.

1. The Conjuring
The Conjuring is one of the best horror movies of the 21st century, hands down. Director James Wan has directed a well-shot, sophisticated, petrifying masterpiece that even 2 fantastic films couldn’t capture the essence of the original. This started a brilliant film series. The 5-film series will soon turn into 7 with The Crooked Man and The Conjuring 3 coming in 2019-2020. There are even rumours of another Annabelle movie – though it hasn’t been.
